What is naturism?

What is naturism?

Is naturism really just about getting undressed?

Not at all! Nudity is its natural expression, but not its purpose. Naturism is above all a philosophy of life based on respect for oneself, others and nature. It embodies values of equality, tolerance and authenticity. This is exactly the spirit we nurture at Lac de Lislebonne: a place where everyone can be themselves, without judgement.

What is the difference between naturism and nudism?

Nudism simply refers to undressing in a specific recreational setting, without any particular philosophy attached. Naturism goes further: it is a comprehensive lifestyle that integrates nudity, connection to nature, mutual respect and humanist values. At Lac de Lislebonne, it is this broader vision that guides the way we welcome guests and live together. In practice, both terms are often used interchangeably in everyday language.

Is naturism related to sexuality?

Absolutely not. Naturism has nothing to do with sexuality or voyeurism. This is one of the most persistent misconceptions, yet naturist spaces are among the most modest and respectful places you'll find. At Lac de Lislebonne, any inappropriate behaviour, insistent staring or unsuitable attitude is strictly prohibited and can result in immediate exclusion from the campsite.

Who practises naturism?

Everyone, really! Families with young children, couples, seniors, singles, people of all backgrounds and walks of life. France has more than 3 million naturists and remains the world's leading naturist destination. At Lac de Lislebonne, we welcome visitors every year from France, Belgium, the Netherlands and many other countries — all united by the desire for simplicity, freedom and authentic connections.

Life on the campsite

Do I have to be naked all the time?

The golden rule is: "Nudity when possible, clothes when necessary." At Lac de Lislebonne, we encourage nudity whenever the weather allows — that is the very essence of naturism. Clothes are of course welcome when it's cool, to protect from the sun, or for medical reasons. However, in swimming areas (pool, lake) and in the communal showers, full nudity is compulsory.

Why do you always need to carry a towel?

It is the fundamental hygiene rule of naturism. A naturist never sits directly on a chair, deckchair, picnic table or any other shared surface — you always place your towel underneath. A simple, practical and respectful rule that applies throughout the campsite.

Can you take photos on a naturist campsite?

Never without explicit permission. This is an absolute and universal rule in all naturist spaces, and Lac de Lislebonne is no exception. Photographing a naked person without their consent is not only contrary to naturist ethics, but also illegal. If you wish to photograph a landscape or a moment of life, make sure no identifiable person appears in the frame without their agreement.

What are the essential rules of conduct?

The rules of naturism can be summed up in a few words: respect, discretion and kindness. In practice: don't stare at others, always put your towel down before sitting, don't take photos without consent, adopt a natural and relaxed attitude. These are essentially the same rules of politeness as in society — simply applied without clothes! At Lac de Lislebonne, we make sure everyone feels comfortable here, from the very first day.

Can you bring pets?

Yes, pets are welcome at Lac de Lislebonne, under a few essential conditions: they must be kept on a lead at all times throughout the campsite, with up-to-date vaccinations and good socialisation. For their safety and that of everyone, they are not allowed on the sandy beach or in the lake. However, a small pool is dedicated to them so they can cool off on warm days.

Families & children

Families & children

Is naturism suitable for children?

Yes, and especially well! Children adapt naturally and spontaneously. For them, nudity is the most normal thing in the world — it is often the parents who are more intimidated. Naturism teaches them respect for the body, tolerance and a healthy relationship with their own body image from an early age. At Lac de Lislebonne, families are truly in their element: the natural setting, the lake and the pool make it an ideal playground. Minors must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

How to prepare children for their first visit?

Simply by explaining naturally that in this place, people live without clothes because they enjoy being close to nature. No need for a big speech — children accept this far more easily than adults. The key is to remind them of the basic rules: don't mock others' bodies, don't stare at people, and say hello with a smile! The rest comes naturally once you're here.

Are naturist campsites safe for children?

Naturist campsites are generally very safe and particularly caring environments for families — and Lac de Lislebonne is no exception. The community that gathers here each season is close-knit and attentive. Strict respect rules, the formal prohibition of non-consensual photography and the human scale of the campsite all contribute to creating a protective and peaceful setting for everyone.

Getting started

Getting started

I'm worried about others looking at me. How do I overcome this apprehension?

This is the number one question from people taking their first steps, and it's perfectly natural. The good news? This apprehension generally disappears within the first few minutes. In a naturist space, nobody looks at you any more than in any other public place. At Lac de Lislebonne, the atmosphere is particularly welcoming and relaxed, which really helps to get over that first hurdle. The vast majority of visitors confirm that the first step is the hardest — and that afterwards, you wouldn't want to get dressed again!

How to prepare for your first naturist experience?

A few simple tips: find out about Lac de Lislebonne, read our internal rules, and arrive with an open mind and no particular expectations. Don't forget your towel — it's the naturist's essential accessory. And above all, give yourself the right to take your time. Nobody will force you to do anything, and we are here to answer your questions on arrival.

Do I have to undress as soon as I arrive?

No. Nobody will ask you to undress immediately upon arrival. Take time to settle in, observe the atmosphere, feel comfortable. Most visitors taking their first steps undress naturally when they feel ready — often by the pool or the lake, where it comes naturally.

What if I experience an involuntary physical reaction?

This is a common concern, especially among men taking their first steps. In practice, this happens very rarely — the naturist atmosphere is by nature non-sexualised, which makes this type of reaction unlikely. Should it happen, the custom is simply to cover up discreetly until it passes, without making a drama of it. The kindness that prevails at Lac de Lislebonne does the rest.

Body & well-being

Body & well-being

Does everyone have a perfect body on a naturist campsite?

Absolutely not — and that's precisely what's liberating! Here as elsewhere in the naturist world, we welcome bodies of all shapes, sizes and ages. It is one of the few social spaces where bodily diversity is not only accepted but truly celebrated. After a few hours by the lake or the pool, you realise that nobody pays attention to others' bodies — and it's a feeling of freedom that's hard to forget.

Can naturism really improve self-esteem?

Yes, and our visitors' testimonials confirm it year after year. By mixing with real bodies in all their diversity, without retouching or filters, one gradually frees oneself from the aesthetic standards imposed by the media and rediscovers a gentler, more peaceful relationship with one's own body. It is an experience that many of our visitors describe as truly transformative.

Should you be careful in the sun?

Yes, and it's a crucial point for those taking their first steps. Areas usually covered by a swimsuit are exposed to the sun for the first time. Start with short exposures, use high-factor sunscreen on all body parts, and avoid the hottest hours (12pm-3pm). In Lot-et-Garonne, summers can be generously sunny — better to enjoy it peacefully than to have a bad memory of it!
